"That's What I Like" is a song by American singer and songwriter Bruno Mars from his third studio album 24K Magic. The song was released as the album's second single on January 30, 2017. It is the highest charting single from Mars' studio album 24K Magic, surpassing the single of the same name by reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's also received remixes, featuring artists including Gucci Mane, PARTYNEXTDOOR and Alan Walker.

A cover of "That's What I Like", performed by American post-hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance, was released on June 1, 2017, in promotion for Punk Goes Pop Vol. 7.

Release and production[]

All Access first revealed that the recording would be sent to Top 40 radio stations in late January. The single was sent on January 30, 2017, to Hot AC radio stations in the United States by Atlantic Records. A day later, it impacted American contemporary hit radio and rhythmic contemporary stations via the same label. It was released to Italian contemporary hit radio on March 3, 2017, through Warner. On April 20, 2017, four different remixes were made available worldwide.

"That's What I Like" was co-written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Christopher Brody Brown, James Fauntleroy, Johnathan Yip, Ray Romulus, Jeremy Reeves, and Ray McCullough II. Its production was handled by the former three under their alias, Shampoo Press & Curl, along with co-production by latter four as The Stereotypes. Eric "E-Panda" Hernandez played the live drums, while Mars, Fauntleroy, and Lawrence served as the recording's background vocalists. The recording was done and engineered by Charles Moniz with additional engineering assistance by Jacob Dennis at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank, California. It was mixed at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach by Serban Ghenea, with John Hanes serving as mixing engineer. Tom Coyne mastered the song at Sterling Sound in New York City.

Composition[]

"That's What I Like" is a hip hop soul, new jack swing and R&B song composed in the key of B♭ minor. The song moves at a tempo of 67 beats per minute in 2 2 time, while Mars' vocals span from A♭4 to D♭6, while also reaching up to F6 in the ending adlibs. Christopher R. Weingarten of Rolling Stone noted that the track "brings the silky vibes of 12 Play–era R. Kelly into the boom of modern trap".[12] In the album review provided by Vulture, Craig Jenkins said that "It's one of the album's best and most modern-sounding cuts by some distance, thanks to a killer vocal and tasteful trap drums (although to be fair, it carries more than a passing resemblance to Beyoncé and the Neptunes’ B'Day sleeper 'Kitty Kat')".

Commercial performance[]

The song debuted at number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the issue week of December 10, 2016. In its fifteenth week, it climbed to the top spot, becoming Mars' seventh number one on the Hot 100. As of July 2017, it has sold 1,377,000 copies and accumulated 522 million audio and video streams domestically.

As the song reached the top spot of Pop Songs, Mars tied with Justin Timberlake for the most number-one songs on the latter chart among male soloists. It has spent nine weeks on the top of the Billboard Radio Songs, a new record for Mars, as a solo artist. It has surpassed its previous seventh-week number one runs for "Just The Way You Are" (2010) and "Locked Out of Heaven" (2013). It has spent 20 weeks on the top of Hot R&B Songs, tying the record for most week spent at number one with "Starboy" and "One Dance.

Music video[]

The music video for "That's What I Like" premiered on March 1, 2017. It was directed by Mars and Jonathan Lia.

The effects of the video were also available on Facebook for users to try.

Live performances[]

Mars performed "That's What I Like" during the 59th Grammy Awards. He also performed that song during the 2017 Brit Awards. The song was performed as a medley of "Treasure" at the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
